Cardio-Pulmonary Rehab

Dardanelle Regional Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a medically supervised, comprehensive lifestyle modification program that helps patients recover from their heart condition and improve their overall quality of life. The goal of our program is to help individuals increase their strength and endurance and adapt their lifestyle so they can enjoy many more active years.

Qualifications for Cardio-Pulmonary Rehab

To qualify, you must have or have had one of the following conditions:
  • Coronary Artery Bypass Graft
  • Heart Attack
  • Angioplasty and/or Stent Placement
  • Heart Valve Repair or Replacement
  • Heart or Heart-Lung Transplant
  • Stable Angina
  • Other Approved Heart-Related Conditions

Phase 1

Cardiac rehabilitation begins in the hospital after a patient has had a heart attack, balloon procedure, heart surgery, unstable angina, or other cardiac events. Patients are educated on their heart's function, heart disease, and the role of diet and exercise in their recovery. They also begin limited physical activity. After discharge from the hospital, patients may attend a medically-supervised (phase two) exercise program.

Phase 2

Patients begin phase two, an outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program, 2 to 6 weeks after a cardiac event, depending on the patient and physician's orders.

Each patient receives an individualized exercise program based on their specific goals and medical history. Two times a week, patients use various pieces of exercise equipment, including a recumbent bike, treadmill, seated stepper, and/or free weights. During exercise, each patient's heart rhythm and heart rate are continuously monitored using portable telemetry monitoring under the supervision of the cardiac rehab staff, which may include respiratory therapist, respiratory tech, physical therapists, occupational therapists, or exercise physiologists.

Physicians are able to stay connected to their patient's progress through regular progress reports that include vital signs, symptoms, and exercise responses. Classes and educational materials developed specially for people with heart disease on exercise, nutrition, and stress management are also available for patients.

Phase 3

After a patient has completed phase two, they are able to continue to build their strength and endurance on a more independent basis. Phase three assists individuals as they learn to manage their overall heart health, including their exercise program, learned in phase one. During phase three, the cardiac rehab staff continues to observe the patient, but they are no longer connected to the portable telemetry monitoring.
